MY PORTFOLIOS PAGE - Create a portfolio

To create your first portfolio, you must first put yourself into at least one department to determine, amongst other things, which staff you can submit portfolios to. This is done from the My Portfolios page.

When you've done that, you can then create a portfolios in a quick 3 stage process:

  1. Choose a Table of Contents that decides the pages that must exist in your portfolio, according to your university's requirements.
  2. Select a look, or Theme, for you portfolio- a banner, color scheme and layout.
  3. Add information, new pages, artifacts and pictures to personalize your portfolio.

To get started, click the Add New Portfolio link at the bottom of the My Portfolios page:

This take you to the Add Portfolio screen (shown below). You will need to provide the following information, described below: Name, Table of Contents, and Theme.

Set the following options for your new portfolio:

  • Name - Choose the title of your portfolio. You may decide to use your name, or perhaps call the portfolio by the name of the subject you are using it to be assessed on. Whatever you decide on, type the name into the box.
  • Table of Contents (TOC) - If you are creating a portfolio for assessment purposes, you will usually be told which TOC to use. The choice you make is important, as the links that are available within your portfolio will change depending on which TOC you have chosen.
  • Theme - This is where you decide what the overall look of the portfolio will be. The theme you choose changes where the menus and links are displayed, as well as the colors that contribute your portfolios special look. You can change the theme later, if you want.

Table of Contents - If you don't see a TOC that you have been told to use, make sure you have put yourself into the right department on the My Portfolios page. You can also create an entirely blank portfolio that only has the pages you put in. To do this, choose the Customizable TOC from the dropdown list. This then gives you the ability to add, delete or move any of the pages in your portfolio.

When you first edit your portfolio, you will see something like the following picture.

The graphics, colors and location of the links may be different, depending on the theme you chose, but you will still see the following:

  1. Portfolio information - information about your portfolio, such as the name you chose, the theme you're using to give it it's current look, and the Table of Contents (TOC)- used to determine which pages must be in your portfolio.
  2. Portfolio pages - links to other sections and their sub-pages. Determined mainly by the TOC you chose, you can also add pages if you have permission to do so.
  3. Ways to add content - options to add details to your portfolio, and possibly to add new pages (depending on whether you have been allowed to do this).

Now let's add something to the home page. We'll add a quote to your homepage to start with, but you can build up multiple text passages, add images, artifacts, internet links, or links to other places in your portfolio. Click Add Content, at the bottom of the page:

This will add information to the page you are currently viewing. You will see a screen like the one below:

This is the part of the Add Content screen that lets you add and format text. Further down the screen you can also include images, link to artifacts that you have uploaded, or put in web links. For now, copy and paste information into the Text box, and add a Heading if you want. You can also customize the font style and color.

Click OK in the bottom left of the Add Content screen when you have made your changes. You will then be taken back to your portfolio, where the new content will have been added, together with a bar of controls to let you edit what you've added:

The Edit Tools that appear above your new text are only visible when you edit your portfolio, and will not be seen by anyone you have shared your portfolio with. When someone is sharing or assessing your portfolio, it will look like the example below:

You can also use the links to move around your portfolio and find the page you want to add information to.

Sometimes, when you go to a page in your portfolio, you may find pre-existing titles for you to fill out. These are placeholders for you to add your work, and can't be deleted.

If you have finished adding content to your portfolio, click the Exit button at the top right, as shown below:
