Getting Started - Beginning with the End in Mind
Designing Your Assessment System
1. Choosing Standards
Write the first table of contents for the first portfolio you want users to develop.
2. Determine Performance Labels
Agree on the common performance labels and their scores for all your assessment rubrics (e.g. not acceptable = 0, acceptable = 1, exemplary = 3).
3. Determine number of departments
Agree on the organizational structure for your installation so that it will support the way you want to do reporting. This is about the division of the installation into Departments.
4. Develop a demographic survey
Design a demographic survey to collect data from users about the variables you will later use as data filters when you do reporting (aggregating and disaggregating data).
5. Write your rubrics
Write at least the first rubric you will use in assessing the first portfolio.
6. Locate any standards
Identify (locate) digital versions of any standards you intend to measure using the portfolio. Think about how you will link the elements of the standards to the rubrics (and eventually their criterion) to create a matrix of performance with the expected outcomes or goals (standards/learning outcomes/conceptual framework).
