Demographics Page- Creating New Questions

In order to add questions to the demographic survey, you first need to create a topic to put them in. Once you have done this, you can then edit the topic in order to be able to add your questions to it. Use the Edit tool, found on the main Demographics Tab:

This take you to the Edit Topic screen (shown below). You can add a question by clicking the Add Question link at the bottom of this page.

You may also want to add a question to which the answers given will determine which subsequent questions are asked. See Branching Questions for more information.

In order to add a straight forward question that would either apply to everyone, or to those in a certain department only, you need to add a question into the current topic. For example, a simple gender query might look like this:

To create this question select the Add Question link, which will take you to the screen shown below:

  • Question = The prompt or question you provide to the respondents.
  • Abbrev. = A short phrase or word for the question. This helps in the later analysis when you choose what data you want top see and will present better in reports.
  • Description = An elaboration on the question, to clarify it where necessary.
  • Choices = The alternative answers for the question.
  • If chosen, branch to = You can determine which questions will be asked next according to the answer given. This drop down shows the list of Topics that it is possible to ask next if this particular answer is given. Read more about these branching questions.
  • Selection/Response = The type of response that must be given: a single or multiple choice, or a response that has been typed such as a number. These are found near the bottom of any question template and are described below:

These three options will each give different questions types. They are shown below:

Name Type Example from a completed survey
Single selection Radio Button
Multiple selections Checkboxes
Typed response Text Box

Procedure for creating surveys:

  • First decide if your question will need more than 10 choices of answer. If it requires 10 or less, use the form as is.
  • If more than 10 choices of answer are required, click the "More choices" link at bottom of the screen. This will present you with a new question template with up to 30 choices of answer.
  • Enter the text of the question in the "Question" blank.
  • Enter all of the possible choices of answer.
  • Decide if the respondent can choose more than one possible answer. If so, select "Allow multiple selections (check boxes)". In this case, rather than radio buttons, the respondent will see check boxes for them to use when choosing a response.
  • You can also choose to make the response a small "Textbox". Caution: This question type allows the entry of any characters. We would urge you to use this ONLY to gather numeric data such as scores or student numbers. This feature should NOT be used as an open, free form text box in which the user enters a subjective response. You cannot conduct data analysis on an open text response.
  • Click the "OK" button to save the changes and to return to the main demographics page.
