Work collaboratively with colleagues to identify clusters of criteria that are related to concepts and behaviors of interest. Develop your formula rubric off line, and keep an electronic copy open and handy to refer to as you enter the rubric online.

Choose ‘Assessment Instruments’ from the Admin drop-down menu. Click the 'Add New Assessment Instrument' button. Choose ‘Formula Rubric’ from the option menu for rubric type.

Name your rubric with a descriptive label, so that you or anyone else will know what broad concepts the criteria choices focus on. Enter a descriptive label for each rubric criterion. Be sure to include more than one rubric criterion for each formula criterion. Choose the rubrics from which data will be drawn for each criterion. Choose the criteria from each rubric. Click ‘Save’ after each edit.

The 'results are zero' rule says that, for a given student, if they have not been assessed on one or more of the rubrics, the result for the whole formula is counted as zero. This makes sense in a case where a failure to submit any part of an assignment is considered a failure to submit the whole thing.

The 'treat as zero' rule says that, if the student has not been assessed on one or more of the rubrics, this enters a score of zero into that part of the formula. So, if there were three rubrics, and the results on the other two were 2.0 and 3.0, the average for the whole formula would be (2+3+0)/3 = 1.667. This makes sense if absence of assessment is considered failure to submit that part of the work, but does not affect the whole assessment.

Likewise, you may set the option for missing data to ‘results are 1’ (the whole formula result is 1), or ‘treat as 1’ (that part of the formula is 1). The logic for the use of 1 is the same as for the use of zero above.

The results from formula rubrics are available on the Custom Tab in the CWReporter desktop reporting tool. To view the results of a formula rubric, select the department and the formula rubric, in the same way as you would a regular rubric. Complete the rest of the form and click ‘Run Report’. You can also save the report as you would any other.
