About Conventional Rubrics

video tutorial - 'Creating a new rubric'

A conventional rubric has multiple performance levels based on the default performance levels that you have set up in your system. (see 'performance levels: About default performance levels') In a conventional rubric there should be a description of expectations for each performance level, so that the student knows how to improve their score. [1]

A conventional analytical rubric has multiple criteria

The rubric score in a conventional rubric is computed as a mean of all individual criterion scores, taking into consideration the weighting applied to individual criteria. The 'weight' applied to a criterion determines the number of times the criterion score is included in the calculation of the mean. If all the criteria have the same weight, regardless of what the weight is, it is the same as weighting them all at 1.

Types of conventional rubrics

There are two types of conventional rubrics: analytical and holistic. Your system should include a balanced mix of these types, in order to adequately measure all aspects of the complex skills being evaluated.

Creating a new rubric

Before you begin to create a new rubric, make sure that you have an electronic copy of the rubric on hand. When you are ready to enter your rubric, click ‘Assessment Instruments’ on the ‘Admin Menu’. [1]
Give the rubric a name that describes its purpose. [3]
Select the scoring type. [5]
On the ‘Edit Assessment Instrument’ screen, assign the rubric to a department. Leave the rubric unassigned if it will be used by more than one department. [7]
Edit the default performance levels, if desired. Each new criterion added will include these performance levels. Add a ‘Not Applicable’ level here, if appropriate. Here you can edit the name labels, values, and include or exclude each performance level. [9]
Repeat the process, to add the other performance level descriptors. [16]
Return to the edit page and repeat the process to add the rest of the criteria. [18]
